Swift 6 migration across four live aviation apps

FL3XX GmbH · iOS Developer

FL3XX builds operations software used by business-aviation pilots and crew. Its four App Store apps ran on a legacy codebase built around DispatchGroup and callback-based networking.

  • Migrated the codebase to Swift 6 and structured concurrency (async/await, TaskGroup, actors), cutting the crash rate by 99%.
  • Lifted the App Store rating from 3.4 to 4.7 and grew active pilot users by ~5,000.
  • Owned weekly releases, hotfixes, PR reviews and release-candidate merges across four concurrent products.
  • Applied OWASP Mobile security standards to meet enterprise aviation customers' requirements.
  • Built real-time features with WebSockets, Realm, Combine and RxSwift. Named Employee of the Month three times.

AR measurement system for accurate real-world 3D measurement

Essentia, Inc. · Lead iOS Developer

I lead iOS development of D8Acapture, a field data app that utility crews use to record pole locations, photos, height, material and condition. I own it end to end, from concept to App Store release, including the app architecture and release pipeline.

  • Built an AR measurement system combining ARKit, SceneKit, CoreMotion and CoreLocation.
  • Backed it with a custom AVFoundation camera pipeline for accurate 3D measurement.
  • Architected the app on SwiftUI + UIKit with MVVM and Clean Architecture.
  • Embedded AI-assisted development (Copilot, Claude, Cursor) into code generation, refactoring and PR review.

// Recommendation

What my manager says

A recommendation from the leader who managed me directly at Essentia, Inc., where I worked on the D8Acapture platform.

I had the pleasure of working with Umar for over a year, during which he played a significant role in improving the quality and capabilities of our D8Acapture platform.

One of Umar's greatest strengths is his ability to work independently, take ownership of complex challenges, and deliver high-quality solutions with minimal oversight. He consistently went beyond assigned tasks, proactively identifying opportunities for improvement and bringing forward new ideas and initiatives that added real value to the product.

His technical expertise in iOS development, combined with his willingness to explore and implement AI-integrated features, made a meaningful impact on our development efforts. Umar doesn't just execute requirements; he thinks critically about the product, challenges existing approaches, and looks for ways to make things better.

I truly appreciated his initiative, reliability, and commitment to delivering quality work. I would highly recommend Umar to any organization looking for a talented, forward-thinking engineer who can take ownership and make an immediate impact.
